Who Are We?

This is us!
We are Matt and Jess. We live in Europe full time and are always looking for our next adventure. We decided it was time to leave the rat race of the 9-5 job (for Jess anyway, Matt was working all the hours the day could give) and move to a rural area of France surrounded by rolling fields and beautiful countryside. Jess worked a typical office job for 8 years working for an insurance company in the south of England. She knew something was missing and didn’t want to be stuck behind a computer for the rest of her working life. Matt is a multi award winning chef having had his own restaurants for the last 10 years but was also growing tired of everyday cheffing life. It was during the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2020 we realised there was more to life and decided to take the plunge and move to the continent. The calm pace of life, beautiful countryside and the French culture drew us in immediately. Matt already had family in the area so it was a no brainer, a move to France it was. We are, as we speak, renovating an old cattle barn into a cosy one bedroom house for ourselves and our 4 legged friends (all 3 of them!). But Matt is always drawn to the water, so we decided a sailing yacht it was, and along came Albatros. A Phantom 31 sailing yacht.

Jess is relatively new to the sailing scene and is keen to learn all that Albatros and Matt can teach. However, she is no stranger to the water having grown up on the south coast of England her family has always had boats. At the weekends Jess and her family could often be found in Poole Harbour on their small motor boat or up the Wareham river getting some fish and chips before the long kayak back through the harbour. She is also no stranger to sailing, sailing with her grandad in the school holidays on his Sloop Rig in beautiful West Wales ever since she can remember. As a teenager, her parents bought a 62 foot narrow boat and entered another boating journey. Since then they have lived off grid aboard their pride and joy which has inspired Jess to do the same, sort of... It wasn’t until she met Matt she realised this would be aboard a sailing yacht.

The glorious Albatros

Matt was introduced to water sports at a very young age and was wind surfing and kite surfing at around 5 years old with his parents. It was around the age of 8, Matt began his sailing journey and has never looked back! As a teenager, whilst living in Scotland, Matt started teaching others to sail on his families Mirror Dingy, and he was awarded with his Off Shore Yacht Master teaching qualification from the Royal Yachting Association. He is no stranger to tough sailing conditions having sailed solo in the unforgiving North Sea a number of times. He then decided it was time for a change of pace and went on to work in Greece for two years teaching others to sail on yachts up to 50 feet. Since then, Matt has owned a range of small sailing yachts and has continued to sail and surf for all his adult life. Now he is eager and excited to teach others how to sail on his own pride and joy. Albatros.
